Our PET plastic bottles are BPA free and fully recyclable. We are committed to cutting down on plastic usage, however we have yet to find suitable alternative containers for our liquid products which can be easily sent through the mail. As a result our 100-250ml amber coloured apothecary bottles and jars are made in Australia from PET plastic which our supplier states is a practical resilient material which has the advantage of being fully recyclable.
Here are some facts about PET Plastic
PET plastic bottles are a popular choice for packaging soft drinks due to the numerous benefits they provide both to manufacturers and consumers. 70% of soft drinks (carbonated drinks, still and dilutable drinks, fruit juices and bottled water), are now packaged in PET plastic bottles – the rest come mainly in glass bottles, metal cans and cartons. However, despite the benefits of using PET plastic, many misconceptions exist about plastic bottles. This information is intended to correct some of these.
Benefits of PET plastic bottles
• Lightweight: Cost-effective to produce and require less energy to transport
• Safe: Do not shatter and cause a hazard if broken or damaged
• Convenient: Because they are safe and lightweight, they are also convenient for on-the-go consumption
• Re-sealable: Suitable for multi-serve packs
• Recyclable: Can be recycled so that the PET can be used over and over again
• Sustainable: Increasing numbers of PET plastic bottles are made from recycled PET
• Distinctive: Can be molded into different shapes, enabling brands to use them to build identity and promote products.
• Flexible: Bottles and jars come in many shapes and sizes, to suit most manufacturers needs.
All PET plastic bottles can be recycled. In the UK in 2014 nearly 60% of PET plastic bottles in the household waste stream were being collected for recycling - in 2001 this figure was just 3%. I am still looking for figures from Australia.
Through innovation, the industry is constantly improving its environmental record further. PET plastic bottles have been redesigned so that they are 30% lighter than 15 years ago and increasing amounts of recycled plastic are used to manufacture the bottles themselves. The industry is also working with other organisations on further innovation in the design of PET plastic bottles.
A tiny proportion of the world’s oil is used to make PET plastic bottles. 4% of world oil is used to make all plastic. Of that just 1.2% of plastic packaging is used to make PET plastic bottles.
The industry, in line with its environmental responsibilities, is constantly looking at ways to reduce further the amount of water it uses in its manufacturing processes.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is not used in the manufacture of our PET plastic containers.
How to care for your PET bottle or jar.
As with all PETs do not place them in the dish washer. Also do not use boiling water to clean them. Stage 1, cleaning jars. Most of the creams and waxes will have been removed from jars by use of the product. However the remainder can be scraped out with a spatula or with your finger.
Stage 1, cleaning bottles. Again most of the product will have been removed by use. You can also add water to the bottle to reduce the consistency of the product that remains at the bottom.
Stage 2, cleaning bottles and jars. Fill with warm water. Replace lid. Shake well. Empty water (this is now grey water and can be used to water your garden or house plants). Repeat the process as needed.
Stage 3, Drying your PET plastics. Bottles should be left open until dry. Jars may be left to dry in the air, or dried manually with a soft cloth.
How caring for our PET plastics can save you money as well as the environment.
Well this is simple. Once you have finished your bottle or jar of product and cleaned it. You can return it to the shop and we will refill it at a discounted cost. You will save $3.00 on products in 100ml refilled jars, and $5.00 on products in refilled 250m bottles. All of our products are blended to order so please allow about 30 minutes for us to get your products ready.
